Approved
and accredited The Approved Code of Practice (L8) since 2001 recognises copper and silver ionisation as an effective method to control Legionella in hot and cold water systems. No part of L8 may be reproduce. The document can be ordered from HMSO ISBN 0-7176-1772-6 for £8. The Health Technical Memorandum 2027 issued by NHS Estates permits copper and silver ionisation as a means of controlling Legionella in NHS Trust sites. The Water Regulations Advisory Scheme examined and tested the Orca system and found it to comply with the requirements of the Water Regulations/Byelaws (certificate number 0010062). The Orca system conforms to the advocated maximum values for copper and silver, of maximum 3 mg/l and 0.08 mg/l respectively, in drinking water as prescribed in the Water Supply (Water Quality) Regulations 1989. The later Water Supply (Water Quality) regulations 2001 do not state a maximum level for silver. Following submission from ProEconomy, in 2002 the European Commission has accepted copper and silver as active biocidal substances according to article 4(2) of Regulation EC No 1896/2000. All design, manufacture, installation and maintenance of the Orca system is carried out in accordance with the terms of ProEconomy's registration under ISO 9001 : 2000. Certificate number A10613.
