Legionella bacteria enter water systems through the incoming water. Flowing water transports the bacteria to outlets. Once inside the pipework the Legionella bacteria breed and hide in biofilm. Biofilm is a slimy layer on the inner surfaces of pipes which develops rapidly in areas with poor water flow. Water systems become colonised with Legionella bacteria that are thriving fast in biofilms. When aerosols with Legionella bacteria in it are inhaled, people can become very ill and can contract the often fatal legionnaires disease.
Any method, therefore, to control Legionella needs to be able to also attack and remove biofilm and the Legionella bacteria hiding in it.
